Make up like a pro

Things happen really fast in a retail environment. While brands continue to inject as much promotions as they can in this cluttered space, consumers are swamped to the point of breaking down. Where then is the effort to build a true relationship with the shoppers? Giving more discounts just makes the brand look cheap while stuffing new product features and collaterals just turn shoppers off literally. So, what are brands missing here? Capitalising the opportunity to engage with technology. Take a look at Make Up For Ever’s NYC Flagship store with their solution to the increasing need for product testing before purchase. Many beauty enthusiasts would love to have a go at the products before making their purchase. The idea here is to use Go Pro camera technology for their make up stations.

The strategic location of the station in the middle of the store attracts customers and intrigues them. While there are Makeup Masters at all the different stations, their role aren’t really to help the customers apply make up. Instead, they assist by customising the shades in the boxes for the respective customer. They provide advice and styling tips to the customers who ultimately  apply and test the products themselves. I love the angle where the brand positions itself at – “Tutorials with a pro – not by a pro”. Marvellous use of technology and brand experience.

Chips dont lie

Who doesn’t love booze with great company after work? We all do. And for the most part of it, beer always taste better with good food. Never mind the traditional pair up of beer with pastas or burgers, chips are still the best choice. Probably still the most popular choice for an after work soccer match with your homies! Now, Doritos have once again created something interesting. The Frito-Lay continues to amaze me with their Tostitos’s “Party Safe” bag. Wait a minute, did I just said party safe? Yes i did. That means you now party without the constant fear of driving home drunk.

The pack of chips is actually going to heighten your awareness of alcohol level as well as do the favour of getting you a decent ride home. Pretty nifty trick i did say.

A concept by Goodby Silverstein & Partners, the bag comes equipped with a device that is connected with a microcontroller. It is somewhat calibrated to detect alcohol from the person’s breath. Should the sensors detect alcohol presence, it immediately signals red and what you see is an image of a steering wheel! On top of that, an Uber code is created, indicating a message: “Don’t drink and drive”.

With near-field communication (NFC) technology, you can even tap the bag with your smartphone to activate the ride. With all the campaigns going on against drunk driving and Uber’s ongoing promotions, Tostitos are throwing n the $10 off deals during the period as well as after the Feb 5 Super bowl game. Well played.

Fun in the box

Another interesting way we can improve brand experience through packaging design. Prior to this execution, Pizza Hut had a movie box concept which also taps on mobile technology. This had a really fun theme to it. The use of the 50s music themed together with the individual donut flavour makes it a rather interesting combination. Somehow the formula for a successful engagement is to combine different experiences into one and to create a fresh perspective to the brand. I think its a brilliant move by Krispy Kreme. Wheels of innovation

Wow, if you ask me what good design is, I would certainly vote for solid aesthetics combined with unrivalled functionality. Our landscape is changing, the building structures in modern environments are less forgiving compared to the spacious environments we were once so used to. Of course, adaptation means solutions that allows us to commute with efficiency. Check out this new mobile cycle. The Cargob Urban Eco-Bicycle is a very awesome delivery bike. I love how it places the cargo in front, making it so easy to access parcels. On top of that, there is a motorised mechanism at the back which basically accumulates energy from the riding and braking. This useful energy can be used as electronic energy to power devices like your mobile phones as well as the LED lights! And what’s forward moving if we don’t incorporate anything or everything with mobile right? There is the app which allows the user to navigate his route upon scanning the details of the parcel box. In addition, it also has a messaging system and parcel acknowledgement feature. Very neat and innovative product.

Huawei smart watch

The Apple watch had been on the news for a while now and since then, a lot of companies have begun their development of smart watch technology. The upcoming Huawei smart watch for their Android Wear tech have been hitting the news lately. The tech company’s strategy to adapt designs for their female audience proved largely well received. In addition, there is now plans for interesting new modifications for their second release in the pipeline. Looking at what Apple is doing, Huawei provides similar options for people to select the type of accessories that comes with the watch. With plans to allow customisation to watch faces and colour palettes, there is diversity for buyers. This emerging competition inevitably benefits buyers after all.

Life’s short play hard

You don’t see amazing feats like this everyday. Compared to Jean-Claude Van Damme’s leg split for Volvo, this is bringing it even higher.  NVIDIA’s recent video for their new device, the NVIDIA Shield TV, push sky diving to its limit. One cannot stop but applauded their daring move. Take a look at the video. A plunging living room with the diver literally strapped to the sofa, enjoying his drink and playing his video game. All these while he falls freely down from high above. Skydiver Jeff Provenzano, straps himself to the living room which was flung out of the plane in mid-air. He demonstrates mad skills as he combats the spinning platform at high velocity WITHOUT failing to enjoy his console game! Is this even real? This is definitely a very solid approach to garner attention from their consumers.

Heritage and beyond

Design solves solutions for our clients. At the same time, we designers infuse our understanding of the brand and its heritage into our work. We blend in different perspective of the product while blanching out the unnecessary elements. A packaging that resembles an old school pharmaceutical bottle, the Tsikoudia, is a distillate from the marc of Roussanne grapes by Manousakis Winery. Premium yet mysterious, this is the epitome of a drink with healing abilities. From the design of the label, the illustrations portrays a Minotaur working in a vineyard cladded in traditional Cretan costume. Very epic and interesting. Packaging is significant as the brand’s first layer of communication to its consumers. See more amazing design works by designer, Marios Karystios here.

Smash Smash Smash

People are way too stressed these days. The undisputed pleasure derived from deliberate smashing and trashing might just be the solution for them. The successful inauguration of the Break Club in Buenos Aires, Argentina, back in 2013 have got people going in a room where they destroy items like shattering bottles, punching and breaking the environment. Now in Toronto, a new concept- the Rage Room, offers a similar concept with a basic package of five ceramic plates and a weapon of your choice. Expect to fray off all your anger and anxiety with this awesome setup!

Mobile garage design

For those who have the luxury of space but do not have a kick ass looking car park or garage, can probably take up this idea. GazeBox’s newly designed car storage unit. It provides solid cover for your vehicle from the harsh weather conditions while at the same time, becoming a nicely designed structure.

Brilliantly designed to open from the sides to allow shade against the sun as well as forming a solid shelter by closing down the entire unit. In addition, there is a remote which allows the structure to open, simulating a traditional garage unit. Apart from their amazing built, it also helps owners to protect their cars while having mobility. The structure is easy to fix and concrete by nature.
